kruger and sabi sand lodges and camps
The most popular area in the country for wildlife safaris is the private reserves that lie along the Kruger National Park's western border, possibly followed by the Kruger National Park itself. Visitors have an oportunity to experience the bush, the game and the wilderness of Africa in these reserves that is a mere four hours drive from Johannesburg or a sixty minute's flight. The best game viewing season for this region is May-October, during the sunny, dry winter season when the grass has been grazed down and the deciduous plants have lost their leaves.

The Kruger is the largest South African park and has more species of wildlife than any other game sanctuary in Africa. The fence between the Kruger and the Sabi Sands were taken down, allowing the wildlife greater freedom of movement. Below is our selection of top lodges in this area.

Sabi Sabi Private Game Reserve is an unspoilt part of Africa ecologically and geographically integrated with the adjacent Kruger National Park. It lies on the banks of the Sabie River within one of the oldest and largest proclaimed private reserves - the renowned Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve. Sabi Sabi lies 500 km east of Johannesburg, 800 km north east of Durban and 200 km west of Maputo in Mozambique.

Notten's Bush Camp is part of the Sabi-Sand Game Reserve which adjoins the south western side of the Kruger National Park in the Eastern Transvaal Lowveld. The "Big Five" - elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard all roam the Sabi-Sand Game Reserve one therefore has an excellent chance of a close encounter with these animals. As there are no fences between the private game reserves and the Kruger National Park, the animals can move unhindered between the two areas.

When the African sun rises to full strength after a morning of Big 5 game driving, it is time to jump into the Kapama Lodge swimming pool or sit on the tea deck with an ice-cold drink. Cocktails are served here on balmy evenings, while winter evenings are best spent around the log fire. A team of chefs create an array of fine food served in the Kapama Lodge main dining room, or in the traditional circular lantern lit outdoor boma.
