DAY 1: NYIKA NATIONAL PARK - CHELINDA LODGE
On arrival at Lilongwe International Airport you will be met
by the pilot of Nyika Air Services who will help you to your
light charter aircraft for your 1 hour 40 minute flight to the
Nyika National Park in northern Malawi.
Your accommodation on the Nyika will be at Chelinda Lodge which
consists of eight beautifully appointed log cabins surrounding
a central dining room/bar with a glorious panoramic view over
the high Nyika Plateau. Every cabin is en suite with bath and
shower and each room has its on fireplace.
DAY 2 TO 4: NYIKA PLATEAU - CHELINDA LODGE
The Nyika National Park covers the high Nyika plateau at around
2200m in altitude. The rolling montane grasslands go on for
as far as the eye can see interspersed with patches of evergreen
forest. This is one of Africa's scenically most beautiful parks
and the hills are full of herds of eland, zebra and Africa's
highest concentration of roan antelope. There are many rare
and unusual birds and the Nyika is renowned for its wildflowers
including over 200 species of orchids.
From Chelinda Lodge you can explore the park by vehicle, on
foot, horseback or mountain bike. There is fly fishing available
as well. Game drives or walks will allow you to view the unusual
wildlife, bird life and flora of the high plateau. If you are
particularly interested in birds or botany safaris can be organized
to nearby montane forest patches or to the miombo woodlands
that cover the lower slopes. As well as the wonderful variety
of safari activities available on the Nyika it is also possible
for you to walk from the lodge alone to enjoy the tranquility
and beauty of the area. Or you can use any spare moments to
relax in a deck chair on your verandah or if the weather is
cool then in a comfortable armchair by your own log fire!!
One of the days can be enjoyed perhaps going out with a picnic
lunch to see some of the remoter areas of the park with spectacular
views off the plateau edge towards Zambia or Lake Malawi.
DAY 5: LAKE MALAWI, LIKOMA ISLAND - KAYA MAWA
After all the excitement of the safari so far you may want
to relax a little and this can be done with a short charter
flight (40 minutes) to Likoma Island in the middle of Lake Malawi.
From the aircraft you will have wonderful views of Lake Malawi
(the third largest in Africa) before landing on the island.
An island that belongs to Malawi but is in Mocambique waters!
On the island you will stay at Kaya Mawa, a beautiful lodge
whose name means "maybe tomorrow". A sign of how relaxing it
is!
Day 6 & 7: LIKOMA ISLAND - KAYA MAWA
Kaya Mawa consists of eight stone cottages each exquisitely
built into the rocks or along the white sand beach. It is the
perfect place to relax, swim, scuba dive, snorkel or from here
explore the island and enjoy the local Malawian culture and
hospitality.
Lake Malawi is famous for its freshwater fish (more than 500
species) that are exported all over the world as aquarium fish
and you can snorkel amongst them as if you are in your own fish
tank!
As well as being stunningly beautiful the island is also rich
in history as a mission station (including a cathedral!) was
built on it in 1875. A walk around the island will allow you
to get a feel of the history as well as experience the friendliness
of the Malawian people.
DAY 8: SAFARI ENDS
fter a last swim in the crystal clear waters a direct charter
from Likoma Island will bring you back to Lilongwe International
Airport.
