a casual drive from destination to destination with stops along the way and staying in carefully chosen hotels (the choice is endless!) that suit your exact requirements. Choose a set itinerary that you know works well, or book part of your self drive holiday and leave some days flexible. The road infrastructure in southern Africa is excellent, especially South Africa and Namibia which makes it the ideal self drive destination where a road trip is an absolute pleasure and a great way to explore this diverse destination. Car rentals in Africa is as straight forward as anywhere else in the world with big brands well represented across the continent. Vehicle choices include everything from small sedans (for those on a budget) to large mini-van transporters (perfect for families) as well as comfortable camper vans and 4x4's, and everything in between!
Or if you're the more adventurous type, you'll enjoy exploring some of Africa's wilder destinations in your fully equipped 4x4 (be it a rental or your own) and bush trailer, sleeping in tents at night and cooking your meals on an open fire while the nightlife keeps you on your toes! These self drives need careful planning as in many cases you have to be fully self-sufficient as you are travelling into very remote areas (in some cases it's strongly advisable to travel in a group). Prebooking certain campsites is a must due to strict controls in place to protect these pristine wilderness areas (this applies to most national parks, especially in Botswana). Most places can be booked on arrival, so it gives you real flexibility.
If you enjoy both comfortable accommodation and a bit of camping in those absolutely 'must see' locations
along the way, then this one is for you. Choose accommodation in those places where you are not sure about, or rent a camper van for convenient overnight stops in the many campsites available across the continent. |
