The Safari Co. was looking for a trailer that will stand the harsh conditions of African overland travel but also provide a high level of comfort when it comes to camping in remote wilderness locations.
After months of research, we decided to go with a Metalian off road trailer. We enjoy the versatility and ease of use when camping with our Metalian trailer. It takes us around 10 minutes to set up camp for 4 people and by then the kettle already boils for a cup of coffee. This easy set up and break down of camp allows us to stop over for just one night when we are on our way to a destination. It gives us the flexibility to explore unknown areas and comfortably overnight in areas with no facilities or services.
The nature of our African expeditions requires us to carry more than just a few tins of beans and a bedroll or two! When traveling as a family of 4 our Metalian trailer makes it possible to comfortably spend extended periods of time on the road exploring Africa's amazing destinations. We take things like school books, 120 ltr of drinking water, a fridge/freezer, solar panels for charging the battery system, a generator to run a projector and laptop when doing training for Touch the Land in remote locations and communication equipment to stay in touch with the world while traveling.
Our Metalian trailer makes life easy on the road - behind us all the way!
Here is some of the reasons why we chose Metalian:
robust computer designed and analysed mono-cock design in 3CR12 stainless steel (offers more trailer for less weight) |

the height adjustable tow hitch, no need for drop plates which limit the departure angles on the towing vehicle |
height adjustable and interchangeable shelving and slides for personal customisation |
the best departure angles (with skid plates) in its category |

creative, intelligent and compact design - it offers loads of packing space and versatility |

FRONT RUNNER ROOF RACK:
An all aluminum Front Runner roof rack has been fitted to accommodate a Feather-Lite roof top tent and 3 ammo boxes in a canvas transit bag. The roof rack is light, strong and durable - perfect for our expedition needs. |
DOUBLE BATTERY SYSTEM & ELECTRICS:
The Metalian trailer comfortably accommodates two deep cycle batteries, a large fridge/freezer, 3 LED lights with switches and various charging points. A solar charging point and regulator also forms part of the trailer electrical system. |

FEATHER-LITE ROOFTOP TENT & ROOF RACK:
The trailer is fitted with a Feather-Lite Rooftop Tent. The tent opens over the clothing storage area of the trailer which keeps the kitchen and main drawer system at the back unobstructed. Access is by ladder and set up takes only 5 minutes.
REAR TOW BAR WITH SPARE WHEEL BRACKET:
Mount your spare wheel on the rear bar to save space and allow easy access to your spare wheel. It also adds a bit of weight to the back of the trailer to help with balancing. The rear bar has space for a tow hitch. It also serves as protection when steep angles are negotiated. |
STABILISER LEGS:
The stabiliser legs fit neatly into the back corners of the trailer to ensure the complete unit is stable when opening the back drawer and making use of the roof top tent. The stainless steel corners round off the trailer and contributes to the unique overall look. |
FRIDGE SLIDE:
We make use of a National Luna 95 ltr double door fridge/freezer in the trailer. The fridge storage space is conveniently located next to the kitchen area to allow easy access while preparing meals. Under the slider we installed two deep-cycle batteries to power the trailer. |
NOSE CONE SLIDER:
We require space for a generator and the unleaded fuel it uses. The front nose cone is large enough to accommodate a Yamaha EF2400iS petrol generator as well as our Flexopower solar panels and a few loose items. The doors open 180 degrees to ensure easy access. |
LUGGAGE AREA:
We use the right side of the trailer for clothing, shoes and a few toys for the kids. It offers enough space for 4 persons and the flexibility of the shelves make it easy to compartmentalise the area for neat storage of clothing. The roof top tent opens over this area for privacy. |
NOSE CONE TOP SECTION:
The top shelf of the nose cone is accessible through a full width lid. The top section is divided into 3 even sized carpeted spaces that stores tent pegs, mallet, water proof bags, electrical cords, recovery gear, the solar regulator and the plug for the solar charging system. |
GAS BOTTLE HOLDER:
A sturdy, lockable gas bottle holder is secured on the rear bar to supply the gas stove. It also serves as a number plate holder. An innovative gas line design ensures that no loose gas pipes dangle at the back of the trailer while traveling and when no gas bottle is in place.
DOMETIC GAS STOVE - GLASS TOP:
The kitchen offers a large work space with a built-in 2 plate gas stove that conveniently 'hides' under a glass top cover. The gas supply os situated just outside the kitchen on the back of the trailer. The kitchen shelving is designed to store cutlery, tall bottles, spices, etc. |
